Under the Boardwalk

Bill Pinkney, the last survivor of the original members of the musical group The Drifters, has died. He was 81.

Pinkney was found dead Wednesday at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, Daytona Beach Police spokesman Jimmie Flynt said. The death was not considered suspicious, he said.

Pinkney was scheduled to perform for U.S. Independence Day festivities there.

Pinkney had already left the Drifters before they had this hit, but let's give it to the man still performing in his 80s.

UPDATE: I'd be remiss not to note another musical passing: British jazz singer, surrealist and all around raconteur George Melly passed yesterday at the age of 80. Here's a little audio of a radio interview recounting his embarking on a tour at the age of 80, despite lung cancer and dementia. (h/t miss kitty)
