This is your weekly reminder that guns should not be in the hands of wildly violent lunatics with extremist views.
OregonLive reports that Brent W. Luyster (pictured above) went on a shooting rampage Friday, killing three people and injuring a fourth.
He was known to police, and had been arrested in May on charges that he pistol-whipped his ex-girlfriend. Other reports of past violence indicate Luyster "has a long criminal record sheet that includes several allegedly racially motivated attacks on black men."
Police said Luyster knew all of his victims somehow. One of the victims, a woman, drove herself from the shooting scene to an AM/PM convenience store. She was suffering from a gunshot wound to the face, according to deputies on the scene.
KOIN reports this prior incident from 2013:
In 2013, Luyster, his brother Robert and a man named Donald McElfish were arrested for an alleged racial attack at the QuarterDeck Bar in Vancouver.
All 3 have with ties to a white supremacy group and were charged at that time with 2nd-degree felony assault and racially motivated malicious harassment for the incident.
The men arrived at the tavern, saw a black man sitting with a white woman at the bar. Court documents at that time said Brent Luyster made a racially pointed remark about it. Robert Luyster shouted a threat, got a gun from his car, put a bullet into the chamber, stepped outside and pointed the gun at 3 people standing there, documents said.
Yet he still had a gun yesterday and chose to kill three people with it.
