Republicans' newest culture war is to attack transgender Americans. Of course, they didn't do that with Kaitlyn Jenner. And it's cruel to force someone to be who they are not. Trans individuals are simply correcting a mistake. To disregard a trans person's identity is demeaning, offensive, and a personal attack. But cruelty is the point. For example, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft just weighed in on CNN about trans people, and he's a hot mess.
"So you're talking about what you agree with, with the Attorney General in terms of this bill, and that is children," the CNN host said. "I'm asking you specifically why you say this shouldn't apply to adults."
"Well, unfortunately, although I don't think anyone should go through this process, because it's a lie to say that you can change from a man to a woman or a woman to a man through surgery, it just doesn't happen," he said.
"It's like spray painting a brick of lead and saying, look, I have a brick of gold," he continued. "You don't; you have a brick of lead that's been spray painted."
"But I also believe that in our country, adults have a right to make their own decisions with what they're gonna do with their own money," he said.
"Now, if they wanna use my money if they wanna require me to say that it's a right thing or a good thing, that's different," he added. "But if you have someone that's an adult, that they can make their own decision as to what they wanna do, and I support that."
Ashcroft doesn't seem to understand transgenderism, but the thing is, you don't have to understand it. However, you need to leave Americans alone and let them make personal decisions without sending big government all over their business.
