During a Q&A on Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani continued to deftly handle attempts to draw him into conflict and controversy.

“As the mayor, my job is to respond to the needs of everyone, no matter how they feel about me or whether they voted for me or whether they voted at all,” Mamdani replied when asked if he saw unaffiliated voters as a threat, noting that about 1 in 10 Trump voters also cast their vote for him in the mayoral race.

“And so to me, it’s not about classifying someone as whether they’re with you or against you. It’s about asking them, ‘What is it that you’re looking for from city government? What are the struggles you’re facing in your life and what are the ways in which we can actually help you with that?’” he continued.

Mamdani was then asked to weigh in on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ strange decision to meet with Saudi-monied Jared Kushner ahead of the midterm elections in an effort to find ways to “collaborate” with his father-in-law President Donald Trump’s GOP. After saying he hopes to be celebrating a Democratic majority in the House come November, Mamdani turned the question into a statement about the future of the Democratic Party and progressive politics.

“I would always hope that at that point that we are articulating very clearly what we are standing for,” he explained. “We know for quite some time that we are standing up to: a federal administration that is taking cruel and punitive action against the ability of many working-class Americans to afford their day-to-day life. But what is our agenda that we’re fighting for?”

Mamdani added that his administration is already attempting to show what that agenda might look like in practice in New York City, and how it might benefit the working folks whom politicians are supposed to serve.
