Apparently, Cancun's favorite Texas senator is hoping to give the presidency another shot.
This won't be Texas Senator Ted Cruz's first shot at the Oval Office, as no one will soon forget the embarrassing fiasco that was his 2016 run against Donald Trump, who cinched the Republican nomination after he spent months publicly dog-walking Cruz every chance he got, even going so far as to make fun of the senator's wife publicly.
When it came to the 2020 election, where he would have once again had to go head-to-head with Trump, Cruz decided to sit that one out. But now it seems that the Texas GOP lawmaker has built a bit of confidence back up, as Trump is finally out of the running come 2028 -- provided, of course, that he doesn't simply shred what's left of the US Constitution and decide to make the dictator thing official.
According to new reporting from The Wall Street Journal, Cruz has been asking around, attempting to get a feel for who might be willing to work for him on a 2028 presidential campaign, where he would almost undoubtedly go up against current Vice President JD Vance.
The Journal reports:
The 2028 contest hasn’t started yet, and there is still a midterm election in November. Vice President JD Vance, who is leading in early polls of potential Republican nominees, is campaigning for candidates in tough races and fundraising for the party.
But Cruz, the Texas senator and firebrand conservative, is already putting in the legwork in Iowa, hitting the podcast circuit and embarking on a book tour. He is also quietly asking people if they would be interested in working on his 2028 bid, according to people familiar with the requests.
The report further noted that while Cruz was quick to bend a knee to the guy who called his wife ugly, he's had no qualms about taking potshots at the VP, particularly over Vance's involvement in the negotiations that led to the embarrassingly aborted memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran amid Trump's ongoing war.
"JD negotiated the MOU with Iran. That was a terrible deal," Cruz said, making sure he didn't breathe a bad word about the president, who was the one who actually signed the agreement that Iran effectively spit on.
The Texas senator has also criticized Vance's association with former Fox News talking head Tucker Carlson, who has morphed into one of Trump's most vocal and vicious critics.
But it seems that Vance isn't concerned, as the Journal reports that the vice president's inner circle has entirely dismissed the notion of a Cruz run, saying that the Texas senator is hardly a threat.
