Sen. Lindsey Graham Talks Up Regime Change In Syria

Now that Donald Trump has launched some missiles against Syria, Senator Lindsey Graham is so “proud” that he now trusts Trump with yet another war, this time a proxy war against Iran and regime change in Syria.

Appearing on Fox News Friday night, host Tucker Carlson introduced Graham by saying he “fervently” hopes the Syria action “is merely the beginning of many more military interventions around the world.”

For starters, Graham wants 7,000 more troops in Syria, “like we have in Iraq.” In fact, Graham predicts it. “I think you’re going to see a ramp up of American troops, not as frontline fighters but trainers, advisers, special forces to take ISIL down quicker,” he said.

Graham continued, “I’m proud of President Trump.”

Graham insisted the goal is to “defeat ISIL” because they, not Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad are the threat to the United States “Regime change comes when we train up Syrians. The Syrians will take care of Assad,” Graham added coyly.

Carlson was skeptical. “So a whole new war is what you’re calling for,” he said.

“No, an end to an old war,” Graham insisted.

But as the interview went on, Graham let slip that he looks forward to a proxy war with Iran.

GRAHAM: Iran is run by religious fanatics. Iran’s not a secular state. Iran has missiles on the side of which they write, “Death to Israel.” I think the Obama deal with Iran is the worst deal since Munich. I think Assad is a puppet of the Iranians and the Arabs are not going to accept giving Damascus to the Iranians.

Graham soon admitted that regime change in Syria is exactly what he’s after:

GRAHAM: As long as Assad is in power, ISIL and Al Qaeda can’t be destroyed. ... I’m for replacing Assad, not by the Americans, not by the Russians, not by the Iranians but by the Syrians. And the way you replace him is you train Syrian opposition people to go take him on and eventually beat him because he has a poor hand.

Carlson did not question one bit of the validity of this enterprise. He did question how long the troops would have to be there and what it would cost.

“As long as it takes to help train the Syrian opposition to get a peace deal in Geneva,” Graham said cryptically. “Our national security interests can’t be monetized.”

While the Republicans want to cut spending for just about anything Americans might cherish (health, education, diplomacy, arts), the sky’s the limit for paying for war, death and destruction.
