On this date in 2016 Marianne Ihlen, the subject of Leonard Cohen's song "So Long, Marianne", died at the age 81. Before her death, Cohen sent her a letter that read, in part, "Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine."
