Donald Trump’s endorsement of Kevin McCarthy for speaker of the House does not seem to have budged either Matt Gaetz or Lauren Boebert an inch closer to supporting him. Ditto for MTG's endorsement,
December 20, 2022

The two congressional extremists chatted with Charlie Kirk about the impact, or lack thereof, of Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy in his still-uphill bid to become speaker of the House of Representatives.

“Look, I love President Trump, I'm gonna vote for him in 2024,” Gaetz said. “I am going to campaign hard for him. But HR was not always his best thing. It was not 'only the best people.'”

If you ask me, Gaetz is in no position to be dissing anyone else’s personnel choices. He’s the guy whose so-called wingman was sentenced to 11 years in jail this month, for a series of horrendous crimes, which, oh, by the way, have also implicated Gaetz.

But Gaetz complained to Kirk, who didn’t bring up the wingman unpleasantness, about “having to deal with” top Trump appointees Jeff Sessions, James Mattis, Rex Tillerson and Bill Barr and called them “sort of a parade of horribles.”

“So maybe we ought to have a choice come out of the House that represents the conservative center of our caucus,” Gaetz said. You know that Gaetz’s idea of “conservative center” is most everyone else’s idea of the MAGA far right.

“I'll be for Trump for president but I will not follow him in supporting Kevin McCarthy for speaker,” Gaetz added. There was big applause.

Boebert was more of a maybe on McCarthy. “Like I said we have to have accountability here and without that, Kevin McCarthy is not speaker,” she said. “There has been no agreements made on that and how can we believe anything else moving forward?”

What Boebert meant by “agreements” and “accountability” is the MAGA demand that any one representative can call for a new speaker election at any time.

“So maybe things change on January 3rd,” Boebert said, referencing the day Republicans officially gain the majority. “But President Trump should take a look at what is actually being said in the House of Representatives right now.”

Kirk pointed out that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, “someone who we all respect,” thinks McCarthy will be a great speaker.

Gaetz called himself a fan and admirer of her, “but it's not something we see the same.”

Boebert is not the same kind of fan and admirer, apparently. “Well, you know I’ve been aligned with Marjorie and accused of believing a lot of the things that she believes in. I don’t believe in this, just like I don’t believe in Russian space lasers.” Boebert corrected herself to say that it’s Jewish space lasers that Greene believes in.

Kirk asked if Boebert is a hard no on McCarthy. “No,” she said, “I’m just saying we need to actually have an inside conversation and make sure that these promises are there”
