Republican Lawmaker Has An Idea: Let's Sterilize Drug Addicts

A West Virginia GOP lawmaker came up with a nifty idea. State Senator Randy Smith thinks it would be a good idea to sterilize drug offenders to reduce the state's drug problem. Yikes.

Smith shared this idea with constituents last week, telling voters he planned to sponsor a bill proposing that those convicted of drug offenses can voluntarily sterilize themselves to receive a reduced sentence.

"If you want to lessen your prison sentence, if you're a man, you can get a vasectomy so you can't produce anymore," Smith told audience members, according to Newsweek. "If you're a woman, then you get your tubes tied, so you don't bring any more drug babies into the system."

"The drug babies are hitting the school system, and it's getting worse and worse," Smith claimed, according to the Cumberland News-Times. "That's where you're having your behavioral problems."

When asked how that would help solve the problem, Smith said they "wouldn't be having kids."

"Drug babies," seriously?

"Now, you don't have to," he continued. "If you don't, you're going to jail for a very long time. If you volunteer for the program, then you get a lesser sentence."

Smith admitted that his batshit crazy idea might be seen as "cruel and unfair and violates Constitutional rights," but he argued that "until we cut the head of the snake off... we're trying to take care of the problem after the fact."

Smith opposed vaccine mandates, but he thinks this is a good idea. Drug addicts are already stigmatized. What is needed is healthcare. Let them overcome the withdrawals in detox; then, they can go to rehab for treatment. This isn't hard, but Republicans want to make it as difficult as possible.
