Remember when Republicans campaigned on jobs and fighting against inflation, then they got into office and forgot about all that? One of those people is Rep. Jim Banks, who is starting an "Anti-Woke' caucus. Way to go after the important issues, Jim. So brave. A real profile in courage.
Woke means to stay "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination," a term that started in the Black community. That was too much for Republicans. So, what in the actual hell is wrong with being woke? Well, if you're a Trump supporter, everything. The former President opened the floodgates, permitting his lint-licking fire-breathing base to be the worst in our society. So, wokeness is their fear.
President Joe Biden delivered the keynote address at the National Action Network's Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast. Biden noted that wokeness is "being honest."
"The idea that we're supposed to remain silent on the abuses of the past as if they didn't occur?" Biden said. "That's not being woke. That's being honest. That's talking about history."
Well, that's why conservatives freak out about Critical Race Theory, too, even though it's not taught in our schools, but they think they see it everywhere. This is why conservatives ban books and cancel educators who dare to do their jobs.
And one of newly minted Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' first actions after being sworn in was to ban teaching Critical Race Theory. Again, it's not being taught to kids, though.
I find history fascinating. It's a shame that children today won't be able to learn history; instead, they'll hear one that has been painted a rosy picture while eliminating any details about slavery. They'll probably never hear about how young Emmitt Till was brutally murdered.
Stay woke.
