The attorney general signaled to the world he’ll turn a blind eye to any huge foreign “gifts” to the Trump family.

The attorney general of the United States sounded like the old Sergeant Schultz sitcom character exclaiming, “I see nothing! I know nothing!” when responding to a question about the Kremlin-connected Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars for Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding-reception extravaganza on a private island in the Caribbean.

For a family that never stops whining about being unfairly targeted by the U.S. investigation into Russia’s interference with the 2016 election, you’d think Trump Jr. would be a little more cautious about the optics of having Kremlev essentially underwrite his reception. Especially after it was revealed Trump Jr. met with a Kremlin-linked lawyer to get dirt on Hillary Clinton back then.

That’s not including the flashing red lights warning of a possible, if not likely, quid pro quo for Kremlev’s “generosity.”

Then again, Trump Jr. probably knew Daddy’s Department of Justice, with Daddy’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, at the helm, would give free rein to any Trump grift, corruption, and crimes.

On Tuesday, Blanche made it official. Asked during a press conference whether the gift was appropriate and whether he’d investigate whether it was properly reported, the guy who made a Freudian slip about still being Trump’s personal attorney made it clear he will investigate nothing.

Blanche’s lame excuses did not even answer the question.

BLANCHE: The president doesn't know who this person is. I think other members of the family don't know who this person is. The president's son has said that he's a very close friend, and that he accepted a gift in the weekend of his wedding.

I’m not sure what - when you say, am I investigating - Am I investigating what? And when you say this person is a friend of Putin, I don't even know if that's true or not.

I think all the relevant people involved: the president and his kids, have already addressed it. I don't have any information. I don't know this person either, so I don't have any information about it beyond that.

Silly me, I thought it was his job to investigate and find out exactly what kind of information he says he doesn’t know. ProPublica, which broke this story, alone raised a lot of red flags: Trump Jr. and Kremlev only met fairly recently; Trump Jr.’s brother said he never heard of this “very close friend,” and Trump Jr. is reportedly influential in his father’s administration.

Can you imagine a police chief saying that because he doesn’t know whether someone is a criminal or whether he acted improperly, there was no point in any further investigation?

But that is exactly where we are now. Sergeant Schultz is in charge of the country’s most important law enforcement organization.

Q: Was it appropriate for POTUS' son to accept a gift from a friend of Putin? Will you investigate?

BLANCHE: The president doesn't know who this person is. Other members of the family don't know who this person is. The president's son has said he's a very close friend. So am I investigating what?
