On this day in 2002, Captain Mal and his renegade crew of veterans, geeks, and runaways sailed out of The Black on a Firefly-class vessel called "Serenity" and made landfall here on Earth That Was. Or, rather, Earth That Will Have Been...Was...By Then. Or something. Anyway, as I'm sure everyone knows by now, we once again have a TV series where the first episode was not the first episode. The intended first episode was "Serenity", which executives decided wasn't shoot-'em-up enough, so they reshuffled the deck and made "The Train Job" the first episode and put "Serenity" near the back of the pack, airing just a couple of episodes before the final, 14th episode, which turned out to be the last episode ever.
Just one example that the show was probably doomed from the start because the Fox network, which aired it, never believed in it. Airing episodes out of order. Playing hide-and-seek with the show's time slot. And refusing to air three episodes at all during its original run. And once it was canceled, nobody ever heard of it again.
Just kidding. Thanks to the fans' fanatical support, the show's afterlife became the textbook definition of a plucky underdog success story.
