Those fundraising emails and texts flooding Democrats’ inboxes and message apps are not just annoying but they actually discourage some Dems from donating and volunteering.

A new survey commissioned by DailyKos and Civic Shout reveals I’m not the only one who thinks twice before donating or volunteering for fear I’ll be inundated with more emails and texts.

Not surprisingly, majorities of the Democratic voters surveyed think they get too many impersonal emails and text messages from Democratic campaigns they never signed up for, Daily Kos' Joan McCarter reported. 60% said Democratic campaigns should not send out emails and texts to people who didn’t sign up for them.

But a good number are not just displeased but disincentivized. McCarter explains:

24% said have been demotivated by the cold contacts because getting involved in the campaign would just result in them receiving more unwanted emails and texts. They agreed with statement that ”There have been times when I have decided not to donate to or volunteer for a Democratic campaign because that just means I’ll get more emails and text messages.”

Does it work anyway? 68% said they did not donate any money to a Democratic political campaign based on any emails or text messages. I suppose it’s possible the 32% who did donate made the campaigns a lot of money but was it enough to outweigh the negative effects left on the rest?

Josh Nelson, CEO of Civic Shout, thinks not. He said, it’s “particularly noteworthy that younger voters and independents are the most offended because those two groups are crucial for a 2024 win.” He urged campaigns and committees to consider the survey “a wakeup call” to stop spamming supporters.
