We'll see how long it takes Trump to fall back out of love with CNN's Harry Enten after this dismal report on Trump's polling numbers. Trump was recently praising Enten when he pointed out that Trump's still got an iron grip on the Republican party.
He won't be a fan of this Monday's Segment from CNN News Central, where Enten and host John Berman discussed his sinking numbers with working Americans on the Labor Day holiday:
ENTEN: But either way, let's take a look at how the president is doing on the economy when it comes to those who are employed full time. And it's just a complete 180.
Look, this was a major strength for him back in 2024 when it came to the economy. Look at this, employed voters, Trump and the economy versus Harris. He was trusted more than Harris by 20 points on the economy.
But look at his net approval rating now amongst those who are employed full time. It is 41 points underwater. Way down there we go. Down into the Hudson River. We're talking about a switcheroo in the wrong direction of 61 points on this Labor Day. We're talking about those fully employed and how they view Trump and the economy. It is not a happy Labor Day, indeed, for President Trump when it comes to how those who are employed view him on the economy.
BERMAN: One of the questions that we do ask in polling, which you get interesting responses is, is it a good time to go get yourself a good job? What's the shift there been?
ENTEN: Yes, OK. So again, we're looking at those who are currently employed, talking about workers. And these numbers have just become considerably worse under Trump. Take a look here. Workers, good time to find a quality job. Bad time. Good time. You know, in 2024, Q4, this is part of the reason why President Trump won that election, right?
The numbers were going south. Fifty-four percent of those in the workforce said those workers said it was a bad time to find a job. But it is only that bad number has gone way up. Seventy-two percent as of Q2 in 2026, the last quarter. Look at that, that's a rise of 18 points. And, of course, you see the exact inverse of that, right, 46 percent good time to now 28 percent good time. So, those who are in the workforce, simply put, do not think it is a good time to find a quality job. And that bad number has only climbed ever higher.
BERMAN: It's interesting because we had a pretty good jobs report last week, but this is sentiment.
ENTEN: Correct.
BERMAN: It's not about the jobs data, this is about the sentiment. And that's not good right now.
ENTEN: The sentiment, very bad. And the sentiment is what drives things going into the election two months from now.
As they went onto discuss, that same sentiment is carrying over to members of Congress.
BERMAN: All right, when we're looking at this group, this subgroup of people who have jobs, what are they saying about their vote for the House?
ENTEN: Yes, you know, you talk about the election two months from now. I was talking about it. Just take a look here. OK, choice for the House, employed voters. Look, those -- these fully employed, look at that, full time, plus six points for Republicans back in October of 2024. Look at that margin, a complete switcheroo. Now Democrats ahead by nine points at this point amongst those who are employed full time. Those in the labor force, they are turning against the president of United States and, therefore, turning against Republicans running for Congress.
BERMAN: What are the prediction markets saying about what people expect to happen with jobs?
ENTEN: Yes. OK. So, you know, again, this is part of, you know, data versus sentiment, right? The data in the real world versus the sentiment. Chance 2026 white collar job layoffs exceed 2025, 58 percent. So, look, that's, you know, that's kind of split 50/50 on this. So, you're basically seeing the Kalshi prediction market saying one thing about where the real job market is going and what the polling says. And the polling says that voter sentiment, very, very low at this point, unhappy with the president and Republicans.
The only thing that astounds me is why they aren't lower. The cult is still way too large.
