Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said in a recent interview that he knew Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) would become Speaker of the House because it was part of God's plan.
CNN's Dana Bash asked Boehner in an interview that aired on Sunday how he was able to get Ryan to change his mind and take the job of Speaker.
"I laid every ounce of Catholic guilt that I could on him," Boehner recalled. "You have no choice, this isn't about what you want to do, this is about what God wants you to do."
"And God has told me, he wants you to do this," he added. "I pulled it all out."
"Paul was the right guy at the right time and I knew he didn't want to do it, he kept telling me he didn't want to do it. But it was obvious to me that he was the right person for the job, and I had to do everything I could to convince him."
