Today doesn't mark the first time that Senate Minority Leader froze and needed assistance. On Wednesday, the Kentucky Republican was unable to respond to reporters' questions at a press event. This is the second time in just a matter of weeks that the 81-year-old seemed to freeze up.
Ironically, McConnell was asked whether he'd run for reelection at the event in Covington, Kentucky when he froze and appeared unable to communicate. An aide said, "All right, I'm sorry, you all. We're going to need a minute."
Things got even dicier after McConnell signaled that he was ready to take another question. The Senate Minority Leader was asked about Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who is running for governor.
McConnell's aide repeated the question into his ear, and then he said, "I think the governor's race is going to be very close."
McConnell then dismissed a question about Trump's latest indictment in Georgia; then he was led away from the pulpit.
Whether he suffers from seizures or he had another stroke is anyone's guess. I'm not sure why he won't step down. He clearly isn't well.
Kentucky's Republican-led legislature passed a law in 2021 ensuring that McConnell's possible successor would be a Republican, according to NPR. The state's Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, vetoed the bill, but the legislature overruled him.
