Audio obtained by the Tennessee Holler shows Republican infighting in the state during a meeting about the blowback after they expelled two Black lawmakers for protesting against gun violence. Republicans really don't like to be held accountable for their actions. In the audio, they complain about being called racists.
"Democrats are not our friends," says Rep. Jason Zachary, one of the Republicans that voted to expel two Democrats. "They trash us as racists. I've never had anybody call me a racist."
"And for the last three days, all I have heard from them is how this is the most racist place for one of these white supremacists," he whined. "Good Lord, we have to realize they are not our friends. They can smile at me, but that doesn't mean I can't be polite to them, but they are not our friends."
Oh no, he won't be friends with us:(
"They destroyed our republic and the foundation of who we are, or we preserve it," he added. "That is the reality of where we are right now. And if these last three days have not proven that, we need to find a new job. There's never been a more important time for us to be unified."
How have Democrats "destroyed the republic"? By letting those uppity Black men speak?
Zachary said they need to pass "a gun bill" and a "pronouns bill."
The infighting between the Republicans was complete with accusations flying out between party members.
Rep. Jody Barrett denied lying to anyone else about his vote, while other Republicans were audibly upset. Barrett was the Republican who voted against expelling Democratic Rep. Gloria Johnson, who is white, while voting to remove the Black Democrats.
Meanwhile, Rep. Scott Cepicky said, "We're at war for our white Republic," and Rep. William Lamberth said, "You gotta do what's right even if you think it might be wrong."
Fight amongst yourselves, guys.
