You really can't blame Teamsters president Sean O'Brien to be very happy and proud while he announced a massive win as they reached a tentative contract with UPS to avoid a strike that would have impacted the world's economy:
O'Brien: I'm proud to say we've reached a historic deal with UPS. It's a $30 billion deal that will go in the pockets of all our members, both full-time and part-time.
Neil Cavuto: So maybe you can delineate some of its provisions. A lot of your workers felt that a few years ago, five years ago, the last contract negotiations, you got the shorter end of the stick. You were of that opinion yourself. So how did you avoid that this go around.
O'Brien: Well, the first thing we did is we went out and talked to our members, and listened to our rank and file members, who have to work in these conditions. We got direction and guidance from them. We eliminated two-tier wage systems, we put air conditioners in trucks, we also improved pensions, we've maintained health care. We've done a lot of great work. We've got UPS to agree to Martin Luther King Day as a be a paid holiday. We've made so many, so many improvements in this contract all for the benefit for our members. We took care of the part-timers, driving that starting wage rate up. Taking care of long term part-timers, making sure they were rewarded. And everyone was rewarded for their hard work. It was a tremendous victory for labor.
UPS seemed to be happy with the deal as well:
“Together we reached a win-win-win agreement on the issues that are important to Teamsters leadership, our employees and to UPS and our customers,” UPS CEO Carol Tomé. “This agreement continues to reward UPS’s full- and part-time employees with industry-leading pay and benefits while retaining the flexibility we need to stay competitive, serve our customers and keep our business strong.”
The union members still have to ratify the deal, but it looks like they got almost everything they wanted.
The biggest takeaway from all this is that this is exactly why we need unions in the workplace. There is no way in hell UPS would have agreed to half of this without the full strength of the Teamsters pushing them.
This is what solidarity looks like!
