Klaatu Barada Nikto! On this day in 1951, one of the original science fiction FAFO films enjoyed its big screen theatrical premiere in New York City. Adapted by Edmund H. North from Harry Bates' classic 1940 short story, "Farewell to the Master", "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was directed by the great Robert Wise and starred Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, and others. Although the director denied it, the story pretty clearly borrows from the Christian origin story of Jesus: a character who comes to Earth with a message of peace, then is killed and resurrected, and to move among humans undetected he takes the name "Carpenter." Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe not. Either way, it is a cracking good flick which I can unreservedly commend to your attention.
